In 2013 the corporation Energy Transfer Partners proposed the 1300-kilometer Dakota Access Pipeline project. The proposed route going through the Standing Rock reservation and under the Missouri river was approved despite strong opposition from tribal governments and the Native community. The pipeline threatened access to clean drinking water for 18 million people downstream. When construction began in 2016 it was met with peaceful protection that only grew after the in following months.
